Kansas authorities have released new details and a clearer timeline surrounding a police shooting that took place in Basehor last Friday, an incident that drew a large law enforcement presence and prompted a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) review. According to Basehor Police, officers responded to a domestic violence incident shortly after 6:30 p.m., ultimately leading to a confrontation in which one suspect was shot and wounded.
The shooting happened near 158th Street and Parallel Road after officers attempted to make contact with a male suspect involved in an earlier disturbance. Police say the suspect acted aggressively and refused commands before allegedly advancing toward officers with a weapon. As the situation escalated, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.
Officials have emphasized that the incident unfolded rapidly and involved several attempts to de-escalate.
According to the timeline provided, officers were dispatched around 6:34 p.m. following a report of a domestic disturbance involving threats and potential violence. When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered a woman who reported that the suspect, a 34-year-old Basehor resident, had fled the home.
The woman indicated the suspect was armed and had made threats prior to leaving the scene.
Police located the suspect on foot several blocks away. Officers attempted verbal contact, but investigators say the man refused to cooperate, ignoring multiple commands to stop and show his hands. Officers reported seeing what appeared to be a weapon concealed under his clothing.
Backup units from the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office and nearby departments arrived shortly after.
According to Basehor Police, the suspect suddenly turned toward the officers while reaching for the weapon. Fearing an imminent threat, one officer fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the torso. Officers immediately rendered aid, applying pressure and calling for emergency medical assistance.
The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition.
No officers or bystanders were harmed in the incident.
Following standard protocol, Basehor Police quickly requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to oversee the officer-involved shooting review. KBI agents responded to process the scene, interview witnesses, collect body-camera footage, and examine the recovered weapon.
Investigators say the weapon the suspect carried was confirmed to be a firearm.
KBI’s investigation will determine whether the use of force complied with state law and department policy. Once the review is complete, findings will be forwarded to the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office for additional assessment.
Basehor Police Chief Mark Hruska issued a statement thanking neighboring agencies for their rapid response, emphasizing the department’s commitment to transparency throughout the investigation.
Residents expressed concern as police units, crime scene tape, and KBI investigators filled the normally quiet neighborhood. Some reported hearing shouting and a single gunshot before sirens filled the area.
One homeowner told FOX4, “It was scary. We saw officers running, and then ambulances came flying down the street. You could tell something serious was happening.”
Another resident said the incident highlights the challenges officers face in domestic disturbance calls, which frequently escalate unpredictably.
Authorities have reiterated that there is no ongoing threat to the public, calling the situation isolated.
While Basehor Police did not release footage immediately, KBI officials stated that body-camera video and additional details will become available once the preliminary review is completed. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.
Officials declined to release the suspect’s name until formal charges are filed.
