An ordinary Saturday at Hamilton Place mall in Chattanooga turned into a chaotic and terrifying scene when a teenager opened fire during a fight, sending shoppers running for their lives. According to the Chattanooga Police Department, 18-year-old Jaylynn Gerald is accused of firing three shots during a physical altercation inside Dick’s Sporting Goods, striking himself in the foot and triggering a massive public panic.
The incident unfolded around 3 p.m., initially reported as an active shooter situation. Officers arrived to find merchandise scattered, strollers abandoned, and customers fleeing after hearing gunfire echo through the busy retail store. Blood near the entrance of Dick’s Sporting Goods indicated a shooting had taken place, leading investigators to immediately begin searching for the suspect and any injured victims.
Investigators reviewed security footage showing the confrontation. Surveillance video captured Gerald being followed into the store by a group of individuals. Initially, he appeared to attempt to walk away, but moments later he turned back toward the group, waving his arms and appearing to shout at them.
The conflict escalated quickly. The group attacked Gerald, knocking him to the ground. While on the floor, he pulled out a pistol and fired three rounds — one striking his own foot, the others fired toward the store’s open doors and the crowded parking lot. Police emphasized the extreme danger to civilians, noting that shoppers were moving in and out of the store at the time of the gunfire.
A trail of blood led officers from the store to the parking lot, where they discovered an empty parking space and a stolen Glock 27 hidden under a vehicle. The weapon appeared to have been discarded in an attempt to avoid being linked to the shooting.
Shortly afterward, Gerald arrived at Erlanger East Hospital with a gunshot wound to his foot. He was later transferred to the downtown medical center due to the injury, which police described as minor.
Gerald now faces multiple charges, including:
Reckless Endangerment
Theft of Property
Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Go Armed
Inciting a Riot
Police also expect additional charges against others involved in the fight.
Authorities noted that the mall prohibits firearms on the property and that Gerald refused to cooperate with the investigation, instead requesting an attorney. He is currently held on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on December 3.
Witnesses described a frantic scene as customers scrambled to escape. According to the arrest report, the moment gunshots were heard, panic spread throughout Dick’s Sporting Goods and into the wider mall.
Merchandise racks toppled as shoppers fled. Purses and bags were left behind. Strollers were abandoned. Some patrons ran toward exits, while others hid in fitting rooms or behind displays, unsure if an active shooter was still in the building.
In one notable incident, a shopper armed himself with a golf club from the sporting goods section, prepared to defend himself amid the confusion.
What began as a fight among a small group spiraled into a full-scale emergency, highlighting how quickly violence can disrupt a crowded public space.
The chaos at Hamilton Place mall underscores how quickly shoppers can become victims of violent crime — even when they are simply running errands. Victims of shootings, assaults, or panic injuries in commercial spaces often face long-term physical, emotional, and financial burdens.
