Two Dead, One Critically Injured in New Haven Domestic Violence Shooting

Tragic Shooting on Congress Avenue Leaves Two Dead in New Haven

A devastating domestic violence-related shooting rocked a New Haven neighborhood early Sunday morning, leaving two people dead and a third critically injured. According to the New Haven Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Congress Avenue at approximately 1:45 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire inside a residence. Upon entry, officers discovered two deceased individuals and another victim suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief Karl Jacobson later confirmed that investigators believe 41-year-old Kerwin Romero opened fire during what authorities describe as a domestic violence incident inside the home. The attack claimed the life of 35-year-old Jennifer Adams, and Romero himself died from what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second woman, identified only as Romero’s 38-year-old girlfriend, was also shot and rushed to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Suspect Identified as 41-Year-Old Kerwin Romero

During a press briefing, Chief Jacobson stated that the preliminary investigation indicates Romero shot both women before turning the gun on himself. Police are treating the shooting as a domestic violence incident, with the motive still under review.

Officials reported that two children, ages 13 and 10, were inside the home when the violence unfolded. Thankfully, they were not physically harmed, but the city has arranged support services, and the children are currently staying with family members. “This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved,” Chief Jacobson said, emphasizing the impact such violence has on children and families.

Victim in Critical Condition as Investigation Continues

The woman who survived the shooting remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities have not released her name due to privacy concerns, but Chief Jacobson confirmed she had been in a relationship with Romero.

Police also revealed that although they had no prior domestic violence reports involving Romero and his girlfriend in New Haven, Romero was arrested in July in West Haven for a domestic incident involving another person. Investigators also noted Romero’s criminal history, including a past arrest related to a 2012 shooting in New Haven.

Detectives continue to process the scene, interview witnesses, review prior police contacts, and gather evidence to construct a full timeline of events.

Community Impact and Domestic Violence Concerns

Residents in the Congress Avenue neighborhood expressed shock and sadness as details emerged. Domestic violence advocates say tragedies like this highlight the need for accessible resources and intervention programs to help individuals experiencing intimate partner violence.

The presence of children in the home during the incident has further heightened awareness around the broader effects of domestic violence on families. Local officials said the city will continue offering support to affected relatives and will coordinate with social services.
