CDC Atlanta Headquarters Attack Leaves Officer Dead, Buildings Shattered

Gunman Fires 180 Rounds at CDC Campus Before Being Stopped

In a chilling act of violence on Friday, August 15, 2025, a Georgia man armed with a firearm launched a violent attack on the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, firing more than 180 rounds and shattering approximately 150 windows across at least four buildings. The shooting, which unfolded late Friday afternoon, resulted in the tragic death of police officer David Rose but miraculously spared CDC personnel.

The shooter, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, had reportedly expressed grievances about the COVID-19 vaccine, blaming it for making him depressed and suicidal. According to law enforcement officials, White opened fire on the CDC campus using a high-powered weapon, causing extensive damage—even penetrating blast-resistant windows—before moving on to a nearby pharmacy where he continued shooting.

White was later found deceased. Authorities have not confirmed whether he was shot by law enforcement or died by suicide.

Federal Officials Assess Damage and Support CDC Staff

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., CDC Director Susan Monarez, and HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill visited the CDC campus on Monday to assess the widespread damage and express condolences to the widow of the fallen officer. According to internal sources, Building 21, which houses Director Monarez’s office, sustained the most bullet damage. Employees were advised to work remotely as the agency initiates repairs and trauma response efforts.

At least four CDC buildings were struck, with windows shattered and glass debris scattered throughout multiple rooms. The sheer magnitude of the attack has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities and the long-term impact on morale at one of the nation’s most critical public health institutions.

Officer David Rose Remembered

Officer David Rose, who was killed during the attack, is being remembered as a hero whose actions helped prevent further loss of life. His sacrifice was honored at the CDC and by local law enforcement, with memorial posters and visits from federal leaders expressing deep gratitude for his service.

The Consequences of Misinformation and Extremism

While the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, many within the public health community are pointing to the years of misinformation about vaccines and public health as a potential contributing factor to the shooter’s mental state.

Dr. Jerome Adams, former U.S. Surgeon General, warned that misinformation can lead to real-world violence, emphasizing that public figures must consider the consequences of their words. Former CDC official Stephan Monroe voiced concern that the attack may deter future scientists from pursuing careers in public service, calling the shooting a “generational hit” to morale.

Legal Options for Victims of Mass Shootings

While criminal investigations continue, victims and their families may also pursue justice through civil lawsuits. These legal claims can address:

  • Negligent security on government property

  • Emotional trauma and workplace injury for surviving employees

  • Wrongful death claims on behalf of Officer Rose’s family

  • Third-party liability if any entity failed in its duty to prevent foreseeable violence
