Police are actively investigating a shooting that occurred on the bike path near Rio Lindo Avenue on Monday afternoon, leaving one person hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The Chico Police Department and Fire Communications Center began receiving multiple 911 calls around 3:45 p.m. reporting gunfire in the area.
Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene and discovered a shooting victim who had already transported themselves to Enloe Health for treatment. According to official updates, the individual is expected to recover from their injuries.
Chico Police are still working to piece together the events that led up to the shooting. Officers spent the evening interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence along the bike path. Although a suspect has not yet been apprehended, law enforcement emphasized that initial findings suggest the event was isolated and there is no current threat to the public.
The shooting prompted a temporary closure of Rio Lindo Avenue as law enforcement secured the area and searched for clues. The Chico Police Department has thanked the community for its patience and cooperation during the emergency response.
While the criminal investigation continues, victims of shootings—whether random or targeted—may also be entitled to civil remedies. Beyond medical bills and physical recovery, gun violence can leave victims and their families struggling with emotional trauma, lost income, and long-term health consequences. In California, crime victims have the legal right to pursue compensation through civil lawsuits against:
Negligent property owners who failed to provide adequate safety
Third parties whose actions enabled or failed to prevent foreseeable violence
The shooter, once identified, for damages including pain and suffering
