In the early hours of March 14, 2025, a fatal collision occurred on Clayton Boulevard, formerly known as US Highway 70 Business, near the intersection with Town Centre Boulevard in Clayton, North Carolina. At approximately 2:30 a.m., a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 48-year-old J. Guadalupe Moreno Nieves of Selma, was traveling westbound when it ran a stoplight and collided with a 2019 Nissan Sentra. The Sentra, driven by 19-year-old Genesis Karolina Mairena Enamorado, was pulling out of a parking lot driveway near a Waffle House at the time of the incident.
Tragically, Enamorado was pronounced dead at the scene. Nieves and his passenger were uninjured. Subsequent investigations revealed that Nieves had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .17, more than double the legal limit. He was arrested and charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, a stoplight violation, and failure to reduce speed. He is currently held under a $5 million bond.
This tragic incident underscores the devastating consequences of impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 37 people die in drunk driving crashes each day, accounting for about 32% of all traffic fatalities in the United States.
