On the evening of Saturday, May 24, 2025, a devastating crash occurred on Grove Street in Franklin, Massachusetts, claiming the life of a 5-year-old girl and leaving her mother and brother critically injured. The family's sedan was struck head-on by a pickup truck driven by 21-year-old James Blanchard, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
According to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office, the family was en route to a birthday celebration for the girl's older brother when the crash occurred. Blanchard's pickup truck reportedly crossed into the opposite lane, colliding with the family's vehicle. Emergency responders found the girl and her mother outside the vehicle, both requiring immediate medical attention. The child was airlifted to UMass Worcester but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Her mother and brother remain hospitalized in critical condition, while her father, who was driving, was treated and released.
Blanchard was arrested at the scene and has been charged with multiple offenses, including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence, three counts of operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. At his arraignment in Wrentham District Court, prosecutors revealed that Blanchard's blood alcohol content was measured at 0.189, more than twice the legal limit in Massachusetts. He is currently being held on $250,000 bail.
Investigators reported finding multiple containers of alcohol in Blanchard's vehicle, including two bottles of vodka and beer. Blanchard allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash, stating he had been drinking vodka directly from the bottle while driving.
The Franklin community has been deeply affected by this tragedy. A memorial has been established at the crash site, with residents leaving flowers, teddy bears, and messages of condolence. One local resident, Rick Talamini, constructed a wooden cross in honor of the young victim, stating, "As soon as I find out her name, I'll paint it on there."
