Outrage is growing after a judge drastically reduced the bond of Jonathan Ezequiel Rodriguez, a 28-year-old man accused of killing one pedestrian and injuring another in a drunk driving hit-and-run on August 8, 2025, in northeast Houston.
Rodriguez was initially held on a $750,000 bond for multiple felony charges stemming from the incident on FM 1960, but just three days later, on August 11, a judge lowered his bond to $50,000 per charge. After posting bond, Rodriguez was released from the Harris County Jail on August 17, sparking widespread concern and public criticism—particularly from the victim's family.
Rodriguez faces charges of:
Intoxication manslaughter with a motor vehicle
Assault with a motor vehicle
Failure to stop and render aid
The incident left 28-year-old Cristian Mendoza dead and a second pedestrian hospitalized. According to officials, Mendoza and a friend were walking along FM 1960 after stepping out to get food when Rodriguez, allegedly intoxicated, struck both pedestrians and fled the scene. He later called authorities and admitted to the act.
Cristian’s mother, Veronica Lozano, shared emotional testimony with the press. “They lowered his bond and then let him out, why? Somebody that does that shouldn't get out of jail,” she said. Describing her son as a hardworking scaffolding builder and a devoted family man, Lozano demanded one thing: justice.
While the criminal process plays out—with Rodriguez due back in court on September 9—families like the Mendozas also have the right to pursue civil justice. Criminal charges aim to punish offenders, but civil lawsuits help families recover financial compensation and hold individuals and potentially other responsible parties accountable.
At Haggard Crime Victim Attorney, a division of The Haggard Law Firm, we advocate for victims of drunk driving and hit-and-run crimes. Our team understands the emotional devastation these incidents cause and fights to secure civil settlements that can cover:
Medical and funeral expenses
Loss of income and support
Emotional pain and suffering
Punitive damages in cases of gross negligence
Even when the criminal justice system seems to fall short, civil litigation offers a powerful tool for families seeking resolution and recognition of their loved one’s value.
DUI cases often involve more than just the driver. Under Texas law, bars, restaurants, or individuals who overserve a visibly intoxicated person—who then goes on to cause injury or death—can be held civilly liable under the Texas Dram Shop Act. This law allows victims or their families to sue establishments that contributed to the tragic outcome by serving alcohol irresponsibly.
Legal professionals can investigate every angle of the case:
Was Rodriguez overserved at a bar?
Were there prior DUI offenses?
Did any third parties contribute to the crash?
These answers matter not only for accountability but also for recovery.
No family should have to suffer the loss of a loved one to reckless, preventable behavior like drunk driving. If you or someone you love has been harmed by a drunk driver in Houston or anywhere in Texas, contact Haggard Crime Victim Attorney for a free consultation.
