A devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 in La Mesa has left a woman dead and another driver under arrest for suspected DUI. The fatal collision occurred during the early morning hours of Thursday, April 17, 2025, and serves as another tragic reminder of the life-threatening consequences of impaired driving.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. near the San Diego State University area. A white BMW was seen traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-8 when it collided head-on with a Mini Cooper. The force of the impact caused the Mini Cooper to veer off the road and down an embankment, while the BMW came to rest on the highway, blocking several lanes and disrupting early morning traffic.
Emergency crews responded to the scene quickly, but tragically, the female driver of the Mini Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending family notification. The driver of the BMW, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to the hospital for treatment. Upon evaluation, officers determined the driver was likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. He has since been arrested and is facing charges related to DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
Sadly, this incident is part of a broader pattern of DUI-related fatalities across California and the United States. Wrong-way collisions, while relatively rare, are often among the most deadly types of traffic accidents due to the high speeds and direct force of impact. When alcohol is involved, the risks are dramatically heightened.
