Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officials have released new information following a shooting involving an attempted carjacking suspect, an incident that unfolded Monday morning and drew a significant law enforcement response just off the Las Vegas Strip. According to LVMPD, the suspect, whose identity has not yet been made public, was shot by officers after allegedly attempting to take a vehicle from a victim and threatening violence during the confrontation.
Metro officers responded around 10 a.m. to reports of a man attempting to forcibly take a car from a driver near the intersection where The STRAT Hotel tower sits prominently in the skyline. Witnesses told police the man appeared agitated and was trying to open vehicle doors, prompting several 911 calls describing a “violent struggle” in progress.
When officers arrived, they encountered a highly volatile scene. According to LVMPD’s early findings, the suspect approached a vehicle, attempted to jerk the driver’s door open, and threatened the victim. Officers said the suspect was behaving erratically, yelling, and refusing to comply with commands.
The victim managed to break free and flee to safety, but the suspect then turned his attention toward officers. LVMPD says the man ignored repeated verbal warnings and displayed what they described as “aggressive and threatening behavior,” creating what officers believed to be an immediate danger to both the public and responding personnel.
As the confrontation intensified, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect. Medical personnel arrived quickly and transported him to a local hospital. Authorities have not released an update on his condition but confirmed he survived and remains in custody while the investigation continues.
No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.
The shooting occurred in a heavily trafficked area at a time when increased holiday travel had brought thousands of visitors to the city. The incident prompted temporary road closures and a large police presence, creating delays and uncertainty for tourists and locals.
Witnesses described a frightening scene with people running for cover and drivers trying to clear the intersection amid the chaos. Several businesses in the area temporarily locked their doors as a precaution.
One witness told FOX5, “It happened so fast — there was yelling, cars honking, and then suddenly police were running in every direction. You could tell something serious was happening.”
Per department policy, the shooting triggered LVMPD’s Critical Incident Review Process, which includes:
A full investigation by the LVMPD Force Investigation Team
Review by the Critical Incident Review Panel
Body-camera footage release within the mandated transparency window
Officials say body-cam video documenting the officer-involved shooting will be released to the public in the coming weeks.
The department emphasized that the suspect is facing multiple charges, including attempted carjacking, assault, resisting a public officer, and potentially additional charges pending prosecutorial review.
While Las Vegas has not seen the same surge in carjackings reported in cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, or Washington, D.C., law enforcement agencies nationwide have warned that opportunistic and violence-driven car theft attempts have increased in recent years.
Investigators are now working to determine whether the suspect in this case has a criminal history or was involved in other incidents before Monday’s attack.
LVMPD has urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious or aggressive behavior near vehicles or parking structures.
Violent crimes like attempted carjackings leave victims with trauma, medical bills, and ongoing fear — even when they escape physically unharmed. Property owners, businesses, and government agencies may also share responsibility if inadequate security played a role in enabling the danger.
