In the early hours of February 21, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded on Miami's MacArthur Causeway when a suspected drunk driver crashed into a disabled vehicle, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old Florida International University student. The driver, 24-year-old Nicholas Robinson, now faces charges of vehicular homicide in addition to his initial charges of DUI with serious injury and reckless driving.
According to reports, Gabriela Alejandra Rios Flores, an international student from El Salvador, was seated in her Jeep Wrangler, which had broken down and was parked on the shoulder of the road. Moments before the collision, Miami Beach Police had assisted in moving her vehicle to the side. Robinson, reportedly returning from a birthday celebration at a South Beach bar, was driving at nearly 100 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone when he slammed into the rear of Flores's vehicle. The impact ejected Flores from her car, and she was transported to Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center, where she succumbed to her injuries on February 24.
Robinson was apprehended at the scene by Miami Beach Police. Officers noted signs of impairment, including slurred speech and the odor of alcohol. During his arrest, Robinson reportedly questioned, "Why are you stopping me? It's my birthday." In court, Judge Mindy S. Glazer denied Robinson's bond, stating, "He killed a 19-year-old girl. She was sitting in her car when her car broke down." Robinson's bond is currently set at $200,000.
The loss of Gabriela Rios Flores has deeply affected both the local and international communities. As an aspiring communications student at FIU, her future was filled with promise. Community and church groups in El Salvador have extended their condolences to her family, mourning the untimely loss of a young life.
