New York City was left reeling Monday after a 51-year-old man went on a violent stabbing spree across Manhattan, leaving two men dead and a woman critically injured. According to the New York Police Department, the attacks were random and unprovoked, and occurred at three separate locations within a few hours.
Authorities confirmed that all three victims were transported to area hospitals. The two men succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival, while the third victim — a 36-year-old woman — remains in critical condition after being stabbed near the United Nations headquarters.
The chaos came to a halt when a taxi driver witnessed the third attack and alerted law enforcement, leading to the suspect’s arrest. NYPD officers took the man into custody shortly after the assault near East 42nd Street and First Avenue.
The attacker, who remains unnamed by police but is known to be a homeless man with a criminal record, allegedly approached each of his victims and attacked them with knives without any provocation. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny confirmed, “As of right now, these attacks seem to be unprovoked, that he just walked up to them and began to attack them with the knives.”
Two knives believed to have been used in the stabbings were recovered by officers at the scene.
Police say the stabbing spree began when a 26-year-old construction worker was attacked near his job site early Monday morning. Roughly two hours later, a second victim — a 68-year-old man fishing in the East River — was similarly assaulted and fatally stabbed.
The third attack occurred near the United Nations complex in Midtown Manhattan. A 36-year-old woman was reportedly stabbed multiple times in broad daylight. Thanks to the quick action of a taxi driver who witnessed the assault, police were able to locate and arrest the suspect.
None of the victims have been publicly identified, pending family notification.
In a press conference following the attacks, New York City Mayor Eric Adams described the events as “a clear, clear example” of the failures in the city’s criminal justice and mental health systems.
“This is about three New Yorkers — unprovoked attacks that left us searching for answers on how something like this could happen,” Adams said. He confirmed that the suspect had recently been sentenced in a criminal case and questioned why he had been allowed back on the streets, despite severe mental health issues.
The mayor’s statements reignite ongoing debates in New York and nationwide regarding how best to handle mental illness, homelessness, and repeat offenders within the bounds of public safety and civil liberties.
The string of stabbings has prompted concern from New Yorkers who are once again confronted with the reality of public violence. That the incidents took place in open, populated areas — near construction sites, riverside public spaces, and the United Nations — only deepens the anxiety for residents and visitors alike.
The NYPD has not released additional information about the motive for the attacks but emphasized that they are not searching for any other suspects at this time.
While the criminal justice system will handle prosecution, victims and their families may also have civil legal recourse. In cases where systemic negligence contributes to violence — including failures to supervise high-risk individuals with known violent behavior or untreated mental illness — victims may be able to file civil claims for:
Wrongful death
Medical expenses
Pain and suffering
Loss of companionship
Emotional trauma and recovery care
These claims can hold not only individuals accountable but also institutions or agencies that failed to act responsibly.
