A violent altercation at the Best Knight Inn on West Avenue in New Castle resulted in the arrest of 32-year-old Tanekqua Stanford, who now faces felony charges after allegedly stabbing a man in the arm with a pocketknife.
The incident occurred on August 18, 2025, around 2:30 p.m., when Delaware State Police responded to a report of a stabbing at the motel. Upon arrival, troopers found a male victim suffering from a stab wound. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the stabbing took place after Stanford removed a pocketknife from the victim’s pocket while engaging in conversation with him and three others. When the victim confronted her about returning the knife, Stanford allegedly stabbed him in the arm. She fled the scene but was located and taken into custody shortly thereafter without incident.
Tanekqua Stanford was taken to Troop 2 and has been charged with the following:
Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
Assault in the Second Degree – Recklessly or Intentionally Causing Physical Injury with a Weapon (Felony)
Theft Under $1,500
Following arraignment at Justice of the Peace Court 2, Stanford was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on a $61,000 cash bond.
While the criminal case against the alleged attacker proceeds, victims of violent crime—like the man injured in this case—may also consider pursuing civil legal action. A civil claim can provide financial compensation for:
Medical treatment and rehabilitation expenses
Emotional trauma and mental health care
Lost wages due to time away from work
Pain and suffering
Long-term impact or disability caused by the injury
Importantly, civil lawsuits can move forward independently of criminal charges and often offer victims a broader path to justice and recovery.
