A 21-year-old man has been formally charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident early Sunday morning in Paradise, Newfoundland. According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), Ashton Whelan faces a total of 15 charges, including several serious firearm-related and robbery offenses.
The RNC responded to calls reporting gunfire near the intersection of Carlisle Drive and Topsail Road just after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that multiple shots had been fired, though no injuries were reported. Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack, but have not released further information about the intended victim or motive.
The charges laid against Whelan are extensive and reflect the severity of the event:
Attempted Murder
Discharging a firearm with intent
Reckless discharge of a firearm
Pointing a firearm
Robbery
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Unauthorized possession of a firearm
Possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized
Unauthorized possession in a motor vehicle
Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
Possession of a weapon obtained by crime
Careless use, storage, and handling of a firearm
Contravention of use/storage of firearms regulations
Three counts of property damage
Breach of a release order
The RNC also noted that the incident may involve a green Ford Bronco, seen in the St. John’s City Hall parking garage between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m. the same morning. Investigators believe the occupants of that vehicle may have important information and are urging them—or anyone with details—to come forward.
