A domestic violence incident turned violent early Sunday morning, resulting in a stabbing that left one man injured and a woman facing multiple felony charges, according to the Peoria Police Department.
Police officers responded to reports of a stabbing near W. Harper Terrace and W. Overbrook Drive shortly before 7:00 a.m. Upon arrival, officers located a 47-year-old male victim suffering from a stab wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Peoria Police spokesperson Semone Roth.
Shortly after the initial response, Peoria officers located the suspect—40-year-old Elizabeth Brown—in the area of Western Avenue and Forrest Hill. She was taken into custody without incident.
Following an investigation, Brown was arrested and booked into Peoria County Jail on several serious charges, including:
Home Invasion
Aggravated Domestic Battery
Interfering with the Reporting of Domestic Violence
Criminal Damage to Property
Authorities have not released additional details about the relationship between the suspect and the victim, but the nature of the charges suggests a domestic violence context.
In Illinois, victims of domestic violence and intentional harm—such as stabbing—have both criminal and civil avenues to seek justice. While the criminal charges filed against Elizabeth Brown may result in prosecution by the state, the victim in this case may also have grounds to pursue a civil lawsuit for damages.
These damages can include:
Medical expenses
Lost wages or inability to work
Pain and suffering
Emotional distress
Property damage
Even in cases where the assailant is known to the victim, such as in domestic disputes, legal remedies exist to help survivors seek protection and financial recovery.
Although this incident appears to have taken place within a private residence or known location, some stabbing incidents occur in settings where landlords, property owners, or businesses may have failed to provide adequate security or failed to prevent foreseeable violence.
