A high school student has died following a violent stabbing incident that occurred Tuesday morning, August 20, 2025, at Maryvale High School in west Phoenix. The tragedy unfolded just before noon and began as a fight between two students that escalated into a fatal confrontation.
According to Phoenix Police, officers were called to the campus around 11:00 a.m. for a report of a stabbing. Two students were transported to an area hospital, one of whom sustained life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to those wounds. The second student is recovering.
Phoenix Commander David Saflar confirmed that the altercation involved only two students, and that school staff acted swiftly, notifying the on-campus school safety officer, who detained the suspect. The weapon involved in the stabbing has not yet been identified by police, and no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
“What happened today at Maryvale is truly a tragedy,” Saflar said in a press briefing, describing the event as a senseless act of violence in a place meant to foster safety and learning.
Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Thea Andrade also expressed deep sorrow, saying, “Maryvale is a beautiful, resilient community and I am shocked and deeply saddened by what took place here today.”
In response to the tragedy, the school will operate on a modified schedule to provide emotional support and counseling to students and staff. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego acknowledged the widespread emotional toll, stating, “Tomorrow, it will be a hard moment to drop a kid off at school.”

Negligent security or supervision by school officials
Failure to prevent foreseeable harm
Lack of safety protocols or delayed response
In some cases, school districts or third-party entities may be held civilly liable for failing to provide adequate protections against known risks.
