On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, a violent altercation at the Brass Mill Center mall in Waterbury, Connecticut, escalated into a shooting that left five individuals injured. The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. and prompted a swift response from law enforcement and emergency services.
According to Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between individuals who were acquainted with each other. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Tajuan Washington, allegedly fired multiple rounds using a semi-automatic pistol, striking one man and four women, all between the ages of 18 and mid-20s. Three victims were treated and released from the hospital, while two others remain hospitalized, including a woman who sustained a spinal injury.
Surveillance footage captured the altercation, showing Washington engaging in a confrontation before opening fire. He subsequently fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities. Washington has been charged with five counts of first-degree assault and multiple weapons offenses. At the time of the shooting, he was out on a $25,000 bond for unrelated charges.
The Brass Mill Center was temporarily closed following the incident to allow for investigation and cleanup. Mall management has since announced increased security measures in collaboration with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of patrons and employees.
